During the COVID-19 pandemic, we collaborated pro bono with the owner of the Western Supper Club, an 1852 Victorian mansion and ten-room hotel in Callicoon, New York, to explore ways the property could adapt to the rapidly changing needs of hospitality.
Working largely with the owner's existing furnishings, materials and collections, our role focused on strategic design interventions that could have a meaningful impact without requiring a complete renovation.
The primary intervention transformed the existing parking area into an outdoor dining and entertainment space, creating opportunities for open-air dining, live music and community gatherings at a time when indoor hospitality was severely restricted.
Inside, we recommended opening portions of the exterior wall with new glazed doors and windows to bring natural light into the previously dark, wood-paneled dining areas and strengthen the visual connection between indoors and out. Additional guidance focused on the organization and use of the existing spaces, allowing the property's historic character and the owner's eclectic collection of furnishings to remain central to its identity.
The collaboration demonstrates how targeted architectural and design interventions can help an existing hospitality property evolve while preserving the character and history that make it distinctive.
