Does an interior designer only pick furniture and paint colors?
Interior designers plan how a space works, and finishes are one part of that. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says designers generally consider how people will move through a space and sketch electrical and partition layouts. In a Darien renovation, that means shaping the kitchen route, the storage, and the rooms themselves.
Interior design for Darien family households starts with storage and flow
Darien houses hold full households, so the design has to plan for how many people use each room on an ordinary day.
The same Census QuickFacts table puts 30.9% of Darien residents under age 18. Those households need room for backpacks, sports gear, homework, and meals, often all at the same hour.
Three rooms carry most of that load: the mudroom entry, the kitchen, and the family room. A home office adds a fourth demand, and a parent on calls needs a door close to family space.
Closets hide storage behind a door, and in a busy house the door is the step people skip. Built-in cabinetry along the daily route gets used.
How do you add storage to a family home without adding closets?
Run storage through the rooms people already use. A single line of built-in cabinetry can hold boots and backpacks at the entry, school papers near the kitchen, and games under family-room seating. Cityzen designed this kind of continuous cabinetry for the Colp-Haber Residence, where one band of birch does six jobs.
Here is how that could look in a Darien colonial with three children. Sports bags land on a bench with cubbies built into the mudroom wall. Homework happens at a desk where the kitchen cabinetry ends, in view of whoever is cooking. After dinner, the same cabinetry line steps down into family-room seating with drawers for games. A parent's office sits behind translucent sliding panels, closed for calls and open for the rest of the day.
Built-in cabinetry in the Colp-Haber Residence does the work of walls
The Colp-Haber Residence, a 2,200 sq ft apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side, shows how one run of built-in cabinetry can give a household storage, seating, and a workspace.
In the Colp-Haber Residence renovation, we turned a traditionally divided two-bedroom into open space for living and working. The goals were more light, longer views, and more storage.
A continuous band of birch cabinetry, topped in vivid yellow, changes height and function as it moves through the rooms. Along its length, the band becomes an office desk, storage, living-room seating, bookshelves, a powder-room vanity, and kitchen seating.
Built-in pieces mark where each activity happens, so the plan needs fewer walls. The home office sits behind translucent sliding panels, and the powder room uses materials that let daylight through.
The yellow nods to the De Stijl movement and plays against black leather and neutral finishes.
"She has literally brought light into our lived experience." R.C-H.
The apartment is in Manhattan. Its idea carries to a Darien family room, where one cabinetry run can link the kitchen, a homework desk, and the sofa.

Interior design projects with Cityzen run from consultation to construction
A Cityzen project starts with a confidential consultation and moves through design and construction with Azin Valy leading the design.
Our design approach begins with context: how you live, what you value, and the character of the house. From there, we design rooms and built-in elements that adapt and serve more than one purpose.
The third principle asks clients to dream past convention. On past projects, a stair doubled as cabinetry and a bookcase became a serving surface for the dining room.
Once the design is set, we coordinate with your architect, engineer, and contractor through construction. Permit drawings come from the registered architect or licensed engineer.
Clients describe the working relationship in their own words. One client, R.C-H., has worked with Azin on and off for 25 years, and another calls the team "great collaborators" who "pay careful attention to detail."
Recommended: Bring a floor plan or photos of each room, a list of the furniture and art you plan to keep, and notes on how each person uses the house on a school day.
Can the design keep up as children grow?
Yes, when the rooms are planned to change. Cityzen's approach favors spaces and built-in elements that serve more than one purpose. A homework desk can later become a teenager's workstation or a parent's office, and sliding panels can close a play area into a study without new walls.
Interior designer Azin Valy leads every Cityzen project
Azin Valy founded Cityzen Designs and leads the design on each project.
She graduated from The Cooper Union School of Architecture and co-founded I-Beam Design, an award-winning architecture firm in New York. Plan and structure get the same attention as color and materials on her projects.
Her work spans more than two decades, from 250,000 sf of international headquarters to 250 sf of refugee housing. She has served as a guest critic at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and City College of New York, among other schools.
Closer to Darien, Freedman House, a family-home renovation in Greenwich, CT, won Silver in the Interior Design category of the 2024 New York Architecture Design Awards. Projects from Cityzen and I-Beam have appeared in the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Dwell.
Commercial and hospitality interior design near Darien
Cityzen Designs takes on workplace, showroom, and restaurant interiors as well as homes, and Darien clients can hire the studio for either.
On the workplace side, our commercial projects include the 7,000 sq ft Andrew Davidson & Co. offices, which I-Beam Design, the practice Azin Valy co-founded, planned around a circular conference room inside Louis Sullivan's Bayard-Condict Building. Inc. and Architizer named the space one of the World's Coolest Offices in 2011.
For hospitality projects such as restaurants and bars, a good example is the Macao Trading Co. restaurant in Tribeca, a 4,000 sq ft I-Beam Design project with an 82-seat dining room under a mezzanine. Salvaged teak lattice screens divide the room into smaller zones, and custom light fixtures reuse antique bicycles, boats, and rickshaws.
The storage-first thinking behind a family kitchen applies to an office too, where every cabinet and work surface has a job.

FAQ
-
An interior designer plans how the rooms work and how they look. On a Cityzen renovation, that covers the floor plan, built-in cabinetry, materials, color, and the furniture and art you keep. Cityzen also coordinates the design with your architect, engineer, and contractor through construction.
-
Many renovations need both. A registered architect or licensed engineer prepares permit drawings where local rules require them, such as for structural or layout changes. An interior designer shapes how the rooms work, store, and look. Cityzen Designs works with your architect and engineer so the drawings and the interiors match.
-
Yes. Several Cityzen projects start from what the client owns. The Lazzaro Residence was planned around a mid-century Eames collection, and the McFarland Residence built a wall of cabinetry around a red and pink painting. Freedman House paired new walnut furnishings with the family's mid-century pieces.
-
Cityzen's published projects are full interior renovations, some with exterior work. The contact page invites projects for a newly purchased home or an existing residence. If you are planning one room, such as a kitchen or family room, describe the scope at the consultation and Azin Valy will tell you whether it fits.
-
The first meeting is a confidential consultation about your house and how your household lives in it. Expect questions about daily routines, the things that never have a place to go, the furniture and art you plan to keep, and what you want each room to do.
